FAQs

A temporary restraining order (TPO) is a court order restricting an individual’s behavior towards another person, often due to violence or abuse.

Depending on the circumstances, restraining orders can include removing the accused from the home, granting temporary custody to the victim, and prohibiting the accused from contacting or approaching the victim.

These orders can be crucial for protecting victims and preventing future harm.

A temporary restraining order (TPO) can be extended for up to one year if both parties agree to the terms.

It’s important to note that the extension is not guaranteed and depends on your case’s circumstances. The court may require additional evidence or hearings to determine if the extension is warranted.

Obtaining a permanent protection order is a two-step process. First, you must successfully obtain a temporary protection order (TPO). The court must set a hearing within 14 days to decide whether the temporary order should be made permanent.

To obtain a permanent protection order, the court must find that the accused has engaged in behavior that warrants a protection order and poses a continuing threat to the victim.
