question iconI recently paid the original balance on a 3 year old payday loan that I found on my credit. when i contacted the original creditor they advised they no longer had the loan and to contact another office. I did, paid the loan. Then I received an email advising they had a lawsuit againgst me for their legal fees. I contacted the court…there is no lawsuit of any kind on file. I have NEVER received any information about this debt, paperwork nothing, OTHER than it being listed on my credit report. What can I do to protect myself? This seems a bit shady and I want to be sure these people don’t start coming after me for a balance I’ve already paid.

Be sure to keep proof that you have paid the loan off. If you later receive a demand for payment you'll be able to proof that you no longer owe the debt. We can't prevent suits from being filed but we can prevent you being held responsible for paying the same debt twice.
