Award of a co-owned dog

My ex and I split up. We are fighting over the dog. Which is a year old. We both love her and want her. In Denver County, Since a dog is treated like property, does the person NOT being awarded the dog receive reimbursement for their interest, share and investment in the dog?

If this is a family law matter, then likely the funds used for purchase and care and feeding of the dog would have been joint funds. If Joint funds then the set-off would not likely be directly spelled out.
If this is not a family law matter, i.e. jointly held property, then the one taking the dog would have to reimburse the other for his or her expenses.

As you can see this may get complicated. I hope that helps and if you have more questions you should contact us to schedule a free case assessment where we can properly answer your questions after exploring the facts.
