question iconHi, I’ve received a letter from the IRS saying I have outstanding tax debt from income they’ve accused me of receiving that I never made. It looks like PayPal sent them a 1099? in my name claiming I made $120,000.00 in pmts thru PayPal in 2017 and I am freaking out bc they say I owe $60k in taxes. This is above the $50k threshold and I’ve searched my PayPal history there is nothing there, my PayPal accounts show nothing (accurately) coming in to me in 2017. I’m an artist and I was literally starving most of 2017. I seriously slept on the floor and had a can of soup a day~ point is, I surely didn’t make 6 figures. The stupid irs site won’t allow me to create an account because my phone isn’t in my name (bc I’m f’n POOR) I can’t find anything covering this topic ANYWHERE. It feels like every option is closed to me. How can I prove a negative? I was claimed as a dependent by my husband that year, which is accurate bc I was very sick. There is a deadline and I’m seriously panicking.

You should contact the IRS to discuss the matter as soon as possible. You can reach the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Because the 1099 is an informational filing, you must address the issue as IRS will be looking for an amount that matches the reported 1099 on your tax return. If you fail to report the amount, or otherwise address it, you will receive an adjustment/ correspondence audit. Thus, the best thing you can do is to call the IRS as soon as possible.
