Assuming you do not have ownership in the house, an adult child residing in their parents home is considered either a tenant or a trespasser. From your question, it appears that you were permitted to reside in the house, and therefore would be considered a tenant.

A tenant, like you, cannot be evicted using self-help measures. A self-help eviction occurs when a landlord or homeowner attempts to remove a family member by barring their access to the home – or dumping the tenant’s possessions out. This is illegal.

The eviction process must begin with you serving you (the tenant) advance written notice asking you to leave. This is called a Notice to Quit. You must get at least 21 days to move out, or no sooner than the end of the next business month, in most situations.
