question iconHe had a debit card that expired NOV 2019. We had forgotten that our HOA payments were connected to this card. The beginning of May 2020, my wife and I, we were going over our budget and making changes. We noticed that we were not making payments to the HOA, but it was confusing to us because we never received letters, emails or phone calls. I reached out to the HOA that day I found this error to see if they are receiving payment. They replied with a bill of charges and fee’s that week owed. I emailed them back and said I would get this paid. I was not going to have the money for a couple weeks. I then login to our HOA website to make a payment and they had locked out the ability for me to make my payment. I sent an email to them letting them know I was having issues making a payment and they said that my account was sent to their attorney’s office. I instantly called the attorney’s office and the bill went from 500 to 900 dollars which included attorney’s fee’s. I made payments to the attorney’s office May 27th. The attorney’s office sent two letters, one addressed to me and one address to my wife. The postmarked dates on the letters where May 19th which I didn’t pick up from the post office until yesterday. I am guessing I don’t have a leg to stand on since we missed our payments but wanted to see if we could possibly get our money back from the attorney’s office? Thank you for your time and help.

That is a terrible story of abuse by your HOA. Have you considered getting on the HOA Board of Directors? Being a member of the HOA Board would allow you to effect significant change for the good of your community.
