At some point in your life, you’ll probably have to take your car to a mechanic for a repair. For some people, it won’t be a good experience. The mechanic will have damaged the car or improperly repaired it.

When this happens, you may wonder if there is anything you can do to recover the money you lost to the bad mechanic.

How You are Protected from a Bad Mechanic

When you get a raw deal from a Colorado mechanic, it’s important to know your legal rights.

There is a Colorado statute specifically designed to help individuals who hired a bad mechanic.

The Colorado Motor Vehicle Repair Act

This law outlines a number of activities prohibited by mechanics.

Example 1

Mechanics cannot misrepresent the repairs that were completed – or not done at all.

Example 2

Mechanics also cannot perform repairs without your first approving them.

Recover Your Money

This statute allows for you to recover treble damages, or three times the amount you lost, and attorney fees. This is a punitive measure against a mechanic who misleads you.

So, let’s say you have $2,500 in damages due to a bad mechanic, you could $7,500 in damages plus the money you had to fork out for your attorney.
