Double Garnishment

My husband and I have a 1,517 debt that garnishments have been issued on. He and I have both been hit with a garnishment. His is about 390 a check and mine 790. Both employers intend to garnish up to 1517. That means that we will end up paying 2x! How do we stop this? How do we get it set up so that total, between the two of them we are only garnished for 1517 total, not each?

It appears that you and your husband are jointly liable for the debt. If so, then the creditor is generally allowed to collection 100% from either of you, but not more than 100%. The creditor is responsible for letting the court know when the debt is paid and to release the garnishment. I would recommend reaching out to the creditor when the debt has been paid to ensure that the garnishment has been released.
