On Tuesday, October 16, 2017, Mayor Michael Hancock announced a new series of city-wide initiatives to help curb the number of renter evictions, which last year totaled around more than 8,000. These new initiatives are part of the Denver’s five-year housing plan, called Housing an Inclusive Denver, which among other goals, hopes to provide relief from the city’s soaring rental prices.
The three new initiatives include:
- A new rent/utility assistance program. This program will help low and moderate income renters who are facing either an unsafe housing situation or a potential eviction. Assistance will be available starting in November. This post will be updated as more information becomes available.
- Landlord-tenant mediation services. These services aim to resolve disputes between landlords and tenants and avoid going to court. A neutral third party helps resolves conflicts by aiding with communication, identifying issues to resolve and negotiate a settlement. The service is free and can be used by calling 311. Additional information is provided in the landlord tenant guide (below).
- A landlord-tenant guide. This free guide is available online. It provides information on the rights and obligations for both tenants and landlords. It also details how mediation services can be initiated by either party, as well as what the eviction process looks like.
Working together, the mayor hopes that these new resources will help tenants remain in their homes and help to keep Denver inclusive and diverse.
